Clifford P. Hansen Memorial Scholarship Available to Wyoming College Students

The Clifford P. Hansen Memorial Scholarship is in remembrance of Clifford Hansen, who was known as a Teton country rancher, Past President of Wyoming Stock Growers Association, the Governor of Wyoming and a U.S. Senator. The Memorial Scholarship was established through contributions received in memory of Senator Hansen and other departed WSGA leaders. It recognizes an outstanding college student pursuing an education related to Wyoming's agriculture or natural resources. WSGA believes that continuing education is an important asset for youth and we are proud to announce that 2018 marks the fourth year of awarding the scholarship. The $1,000 cash scholarship will be awarded for the 2019-2020 academic year and sent to the scholarship winner in the Fall of 2019 semester.

"The Hansen Memorial Scholarship serves as a reminder of the dedicated leadership provided to WSGA and to the State of Wyoming by past and current leaders of our industry," stated Executive Vice President, Jim Magagna.

To be eligible, students, parents or guardian must be a member in good standing of WSGA. The applicant must be a sophomore, junior or senior for the Fall semester of 2019 or a senior who is graduating in the fall of 2019 and has been accepted into graduate school for the 2020 spring semester. The student must be enrolled full-time at the University of Wyoming or a Wyoming Community College, have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and be majoring in agriculture or a natural resource related field.

All applications will be due Friday, April 5, 2019 to the WSGA. The winner will be approved by the WSGA trustees based on recommendation from the WSGA Executive Committee. The scholarship winner will be announced at the 2019 Wyoming Cattle Industry Convention & Trade Show. 

Deadline: April 5, 2019

Application: To apply for this scholarship, the applicant must submit an official transcript and essay of 500 words or less addressing the following questions:

  1. What have you gained from you college experience?
  2. What leadership roles have you acquired since starting college and how have those leadership roles influenced you?
  3. How do your post-college plans involve agriculture or natural resources?
  4. What characteristics distinguish you as deserving this scholarship?

Nick Theos Public Lands Council Scholarship

The Public Lands Council (PLC) has opened applications for the Nick Theos Scholarship Program, offering qualified college students a unique opportunity to attend the PLC 2019 Spring Legislative Conference April 1-1, 2019 in Washington, D.C.

Selected scholarship recipients will join conference attendees as they meet with members of Congress, federal government agency officials and leading policy influencers to communicate policy priorities of the public land ranching industry.

Two Nick Theos scholarships are available for 2019. The scholarships include a $250 stipend, hotel accommodations, and complimentary conference registration. While PLC is unable to to pay for travel in full, the Wyoming Public Lands Council will be offering a travel scholarship to the chosen applicant from Wyoming to help cover travel costs to Washington, D.C.

The one of a kind program allows college students with an interest in regulatory policy surrounding the public lands ranching industry an opportunity to learn about current members of congress, attend meetings with agency officials and hear from leading experts and influencers in the industry.

Nick Theos, a founding member of PLC and lifetime supporter of the livestock industry, passed away on April 11, 2013, at the age of 92. The scholarship was created by the Theos family to encourage the next generation to engage in the policy issues facing public lands ranching.

Applicants should have demonstrated interest in public lands ranching. We ask that they complete the form below, include a current resume and two letters of recommendation from individuals that can attest to the professionalism and interest of the applicant. The Wyoming Public Lands Council will review and select the chosen applicants to the national Nick Theos PLC scholarship. The scholarship winner should be prepared to give short remarks during the Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.

Application, resume and letters of recommendation should be submitted by the end of the day of Friday, February 1, 2019. The Wyoming Public Lands Coalition will review and select applicants and submit the applicants to the national scholarship. The PLC Executive Committee will select the the two recipients.
